Golden Square Mile

The quiet luxury of old fortunes

The vibe

Along Sherbrooke West, galleries follow limestone facades and the sidewalk climbs gently toward Mount Royal. The Golden Square Mile cultivates an elegance that never raises its voice: hotel doormen, hurried McGill students, sculptures set on street corners. You walk between two eras here — that of the grand Victorian mansions and that of the towers now framing them.

Good to know

Enter the McGill campus through the Roddick Gates for one of downtown’s finest views.

When to go

Daytime for the museums and galleries of Sherbrooke; in late afternoon, low light grazes the limestone and flatters the facades.

Getting there

Green line, Peel or Guy-Concordia stations. From downtown everything is walkable — the district climbs, bring good shoes.

The story

How the neighbourhood came to be

In the late 19th century, magnates — shipowners, bankers, railway barons, many of Scottish descent — built their mansions on the mountain’s flank. By the most commonly cited estimate, these families then controlled a striking share of Canada’s wealth. Many houses have vanished or changed purpose, absorbed by McGill and other institutions, but the Museum of Fine Arts and the private clubs keep the area’s spirit alive.

Did you know?

1At the turn of the 20th century, the families of the Golden Square Mile were estimated to hold a major share of Canada’s wealth.
2The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, founded in 1860, is the oldest art museum in Canada.
3Ravenscrag, shipping magnate Hugh Allan’s vast mansion, bequeathed to McGill, still looms over Avenue des Pins.

Cocktail feutré au Golden Square Mile

At the turn of the 20th century, the Golden Square Mile alone held **two-thirds of Canada's wealth**; what remains are Victorian mansions, majestic hotel lobbies and a way of drinking practised in hushed tones. The ritual is to treat yourself to a single cocktail, but the right one: an old fashioned or a martini prepared without haste, served in a deep armchair, under high ceilings and lighting that flatters everyone. Around you, the muffled conversation of business people, anniversary couples and elegant travellers replaces music that's too loud. It is the antithesis of the Main, and that is exactly why you go: to slow down, well dressed, in the Montreal of the great anglophone era. Insider tip: aim for the quiet window between 5 and 7 p.m., when the hotel bars are still calm and the window banquettes are free.

Remonter Sherbrooke dans le Golden Square Mile

Fifteen minutes on Sherbrooke West, between Guy and McGill College, take you across the quarter where Canadian wealth pooled in the nineteenth century. You climb one grey-stone mansion at a time: these homes of the anglo-Montreal bourgeoisie house consulates, private clubs and McGill faculties, wedged between glass towers. The Ritz-Carlton has held the Drummond corner since 1912, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts closes the walk to the west and the McCord Stewart Museum to the east. Closer to Sainte-Catherine the setting turns commercial. Insider tip: look above the ground floors, where nearly all the heritage survived the renovations.
