Bishop Ignace Bourget wanted his cathedral in the middle of the Protestant Golden Square Mile, and he wanted it modelled on St. Peter's in Rome, at one-third scale.
Victor Bourgeau and Father Joseph Michaud went to measure the original before drawing the plans; the site ran from 1870 to 1894.
