The vibe

You enter under an archway and everything tightens: dim sum steam in the windows, lacquered ducks hanging on hooks, vertical signs, conversations in Cantonese. Chinatown fits into a few streets around De La Gauchetière, yet the density is total — smells, colours, memory. You move through it on foot, slowly, between bakeries and herbalists, in one of the oldest Chinatowns in the country.

The story

How the neighbourhood came to be

The first Chinese immigrants, many arriving after the great railway projects of the West, settled here in the late 19th century, in an area that was then Jewish and Irish. Despite discriminatory laws, expropriations and the highways that carved into it, the neighbourhood held on, sustained by its family associations and institutions. Its recent heritage recognition confirmed what its residents already knew: this tiny perimeter is an essential piece of Montreal.

Four paifang gates, six streets, and the sharpest shift in Montreal: you come through the Gauchetière gate straight out of Old Montreal and the register changes at once — grey stone giving way to red signage, fresh tofu, red bean pastries and bánh mì counters. The district is small, dense and under constant real estate pressure; the family businesses holding on since the 1980s carry real documentary weight. Twenty minutes to cross it, an hour to understand it. It is also the foot of Saint-Laurent boulevard: from here the Main climbs north and never stops.
