Conditions vary by street, time and situation. Use these pointers to plan your journeys.
Areas needing more care · check the exact address
A municipal report published in 2025 notes persistent concentrations of shootings in parts of Brownsville, northern Harlem, East Harlem and the South and Central Bronx. This does not classify entire neighbourhoods as dangerous for visitors. Our advice: before booking accommodation or a late outing in an unfamiliar area, check the street, transit and recent local data; avoid improvised, isolated routes at night.

In crowds, keep your phone and wallet in a closed pocket and your bag in front of you. Street performances and photo stops can distract you: keep belongings off the ground and do not hang your bag behind a chair.
NYPD — Sightseeing safety ↗Battery Park, taxis & fake tickets
In 2026, the City Council reported misleading practices involving unlicensed taxis, pedicabs and ferry tickets. Book with the official operator, confirm the price before boarding and decline high-pressure sales. The Staten Island Ferry is free.

Plan your route before leaving and check service changes. Stand back from the platform edge. Our advice for a late journey: choose busy areas and cars; if you feel uncomfortable, approach a staff member or choose another route. For immediate danger, call 911.
