The story

How the neighbourhood came to be

Verdun owes its name to Saverdun, the home village of Zacharie Dupuis, the 17th-century officer granted the land. An independent city until the 2002 mergers, it long stood out for its strictness: drinking establishments were banned for most of the 20th century, a legacy of the temperance movements. History’s irony is that its main street has become one of Montreal’s liveliest, and its riverbank an urban beach.

Opened in 2019, Verdun Beach gave Montrealers back something they had lost for decades: swimming in the river, right in the city, for free. The ritual starts on Wellington Street (voted one of the coolest streets in the world), where you grab a coffee or a sandwich, then head down to the banks through small residential streets lined with flowered duplexes. At the end of the path: a cove of sand and pebbles, willows, the living water of the St. Lawrence and, across the way, the green silhouette of the Lachine Rapids. You swim under supervision in summer, read on the rocks, watch herons fish in the fall. It is the southwest's worst-kept secret, and it earns every minute of the walk. Insider tip: go on a weekday before 11 a.m., the beach is tiny and August weekends belong to the early birds.
