The story

How the neighbourhood came to be

The great waves of Italian immigration in the early 20th century anchored themselves around the church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Défense, completed in the 1910s and decorated by master glassmaker and fresco painter Guerino Nincheri. The neighbourhood has seen family grocers, Calabrian and Sicilian social clubs, then generations who spread out to Saint-Léonard and Rivière-des-Prairies — but everyone still comes back to Little Italy for coffee, mass or the market.

A mile and a half of Saint-Laurent Boulevard separates Jean-Talon Market from Saint-Viateur Street, and this short stretch tells a century of Montreal immigration better than any plaque. You start at the **Little Italy** cafes, where regulars still take their espresso standing at the counter, walk past grocers who slice mortadella to order, and detour one street east to see the Madonna della Difesa fresco, the most argued-over in the city. Then the rail line cuts across: storefronts thin out, triplexes take over, and the Mile End begins without warning, somewhere before Bernard. Twenty minutes of gentle downhill walking, no detours to plan. Insider tip: go before noon, while the Italian cafes are still slow enough to sit down.

Since **1933**, Jean-Talon Market has been Montreal's open-air pantry, and one of North America's largest public markets. The Saturday morning ritual is immutable: arrive early, do a full lap without buying anything, taste the Île d'Orléans strawberries when a grower holds out a basket, compare heirloom tomatoes and finally give in to a Quebec cheese you didn't know existed. Around the stalls, the cheese shops, butchers and fine grocers of Little Italy complete the rounds. You always leave with more than planned, and a sudden urge to cook for twelve. Insider tip: the best deals happen late on Sunday afternoons, when producers sell off their crates rather than pack them up.
