The vibe

In summer, Sainte-Catherine East closes to cars and becomes one long terrace shaded by hanging installations, where you stroll down the middle of the street as if through a living room. The Village blends drag, flags, daytime cafés and late-night clubs with disarming ease. This is a neighbourhood that doesn’t just welcome — it celebrates, loudly, and has for a long time.

The story

How the neighbourhood came to be

Montreal’s gay community, long clustered further west, moved east in the 1980s and turned this working-class area into one of the largest LGBTQ+ villages in North America. Behind the party lies a history of struggle — police raids, mobilization, hard-won recognition — and a dense network of community organizations. The summer pedestrianization, now a ritual, completed the transformation of the street itself into the neighbourhood’s heart.

Apéro les pieds dans le sable au Pied-du-Courant

Sand, pavilions repainted each year by Quebec designers, and behind them the rail tracks, then the river. Village au Pied-du-Courant has held a former snow dump at the foot of the Jacques-Cartier Bridge since 2014. Come out at Papineau metro, follow de Lorimier under the bridge, then hug the shore eastward. After that everything slows down: a beer at the biergarten, feet in the sand, freighters sliding past La Ronde, the DJ easing the volume up as the sun drops. Entry stays free early in the evening and turns paid later, so showing up early also gets you the pick of the deck chairs facing the bridge. On fireworks nights the sand is as good as the grandstands, minus the grandstands.
