The Flatiron District takes its name from the triangular building that splits the corner of Broadway and Fifth Avenue. Around it, Madison Square Park is the whole neighbourhood's garden, old department stores have become shops and restaurants, and tech offices mingle with elegant hotel bars.
In the late 19th century, the stretch of Broadway and Sixth Avenue nicknamed Ladies' Mile was lined with the city's most fashionable department stores. In 1902, architect Daniel Burnham built the Fuller Building here, quickly renamed the Flatiron for its clothes-iron silhouette — one of New York's first skyscrapers. Neighbouring Madison Square gave its name to the famous arena, which was born here before moving on.
