Pedestrian streets, neon signs, fashion shops, cinemas and street food: Ximending is the district of Taiwanese youth. You’ll find street performers, themed cafés and the Red House, a former octagonal market.
Under Japanese rule, the area became the entertainment district, with theatres and cinemas. The Red House, built in 1908, was the city’s first public market. Now pedestrianised, the area remains the weekend meeting place for young people.
