Weary Haussmann-style buildings, historic cafés, bookshops and small music venues: Wust el-Balad, downtown, is the modern Cairo of the 19th century. Visit the old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square and have tea in cafés where writers and revolutionaries debated.
