On the western hills, Vila Madalena is São Paulo’s bohemian district: graffiti-covered alleys such as Beco do Batman, galleries, designer shops and dozens of botecos serving ice-cold beer on the pavement.
A working-class area settled by Portuguese immigrants in the early 20th century, Vila Madalena drew students from the nearby University of São Paulo in the 1970s. They made it an artistic, festive hub, now one of the city’s liveliest neighbourhoods.
