Across the Tiber, Trastevere is all cobbled lanes, ivy-covered ochre façades and trattorias with outdoor tables. In the evening, the square of Santa Maria in Trastevere becomes the meeting point for Romans and visitors alike.
A working-class area “beyond the Tiber” since antiquity, Trastevere was long home to sailors, craftsmen and immigrants. Its residents, the Trasteverini, claimed to be the most authentic Romans. Its basilica of Santa Maria is one of Rome’s oldest churches.
