Testaccio is where Romans eat Roman: oxtail stew, carbonara and supplì. Its covered market, family trattorias and the former slaughterhouse turned cultural venue make it an authentic address, away from the crowds.
The area grew around Monte Testaccio, an artificial hill formed from millions of broken amphorae from the ancient port. In the late 19th century, the slaughterhouse drew workers and butchers, who invented Rome’s typical offal cuisine.
