Cambie Street's heritage boulevard
South Cambie is a low-key neighbourhood of period houses and tall trees, crossed by Cambie Street and its tree-lined median. People come for its small restaurants and neighbourhood bars, steps from Queen Elizabeth Park and a few stops from downtown.
Cambie Street is named after Henry John Cambie, a Canadian Pacific engineer who surveyed part of the transcontinental railway. The broad, tree-planted median that divides it was planned in the area's early days and is now one of the city's protected landscapes. Building the Canada Line under the street, opened in 2009 ahead of the Olympics, disrupted the neighbourhood for years before bringing it closer to downtown.
