A business district by day, Silom comes alive at night with night markets, restaurants and bars perched on towers. Lumphini Park, the city’s green lung, welcomes joggers, tai chi classes and monitor lizards.
The name Silom, “windmill”, recalls the mills that once pumped water in this farming area. In the 20th century, banks and embassies moved in, and the Hindu Sri Maha Mariamman temple, built in 1879, reflects the former Tamil community.
