The vibe

A former East End warehouse district, Shoreditch has become London’s creative hub. Come for the murals of Brick Lane, the curry houses, Columbia Road’s Sunday flower market, vintage shops and bars in old factories.

The story

How the neighbourhood came to be

Home to Huguenot weavers in the 18th century and then successive waves of immigrants, including Brick Lane’s Bangladeshi community, Shoreditch lost its industries in the 20th century. In the 1990s, artists and start-ups moved into the cheap warehouses and made it one of Europe’s trendiest districts.
