A few minutes from Shibuya, Shimokitazawa is Tokyo’s bohemian district: thrift stores, record shops, small theatres, live houses and independent cafés in a maze of low-rise lanes.
A residential area spared by big developments, Shimokitazawa drew students and musicians after the war, then became the centre of Tokyo’s independent theatre. Putting the Odakyū line underground in 2013 freed a long strip of land now lined with shops and gardens.
