Around one of the oldest churches in Paris, Saint-Germain-des-Prés is lined with legendary cafés, bookshops, galleries and publishers. Come for the Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots, the antique dealers of Rue Jacob and a walk to the Luxembourg Gardens.
The district grew around a 6th-century abbey whose church still stands. After the Second World War it became the heart of Parisian intellectual life: Sartre and Beauvoir wrote at the Flore, and cellars hosted jazz and the existentialists.
