Narrow, colourful houses, stepped lanes and terraces facing the river: the Ribeira is Porto’s postcard. Stroll along the quay beneath the Dom Luís Bridge, then climb the lanes up to the cathedral.
A former district of merchants and fishermen, the Ribeira saw ships set sail in Portugal’s great maritime age. Tradition holds that Prince Henry the Navigator was born in 1394 in the nearby Casa do Infante. The historic centre has been a World Heritage Site since 1996.
