Stairways, vines, windmills and little squares: Montmartre keeps a village feel above Paris. Come up for the view from Sacré-Cœur, the painters of Place du Tertre, the lanes around Rue de l’Abreuvoir and the bistros of Rue des Abbesses.
An independent village annexed to Paris in 1860, Montmartre drew penniless artists in the late 19th century with its low rents and cabarets. Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh and later Picasso, who painted Les Demoiselles d’Avignon at the Bateau-Lavoir, made it the cradle of modern art.
