The Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island, Unter den Linden and the courtyards of Hackescher Markt: Mitte gathers Berlin’s great monuments along with galleries and boutiques. In a few streets you move from Prussian history to Cold War memorials.
The city’s birthplace, grown from two merchant villages on the Spree, Mitte became the centre of the Prussian and then imperial capital. Split by the Wall and almost entirely in the East, it regained its role as political and cultural heart after 1990, with the Reichstag and the Chancellery nearby.
