Skyscrapers, giant gardens and bayside walks: Marina Bay is Singapore’s postcard. Come for the Supertrees at Gardens by the Bay, the Merlion, the nearby Civic District museums and the light show on the water after dark.

Good to know

The walk around the bay is free and offers much the same views as the paid rooftops.

When to go

Late afternoon, to see the gardens by day and the Supertrees light up.

Getting there

MRT to Bayfront (Circle and Downtown lines) or Marina Bay.

The story

How the neighbourhood came to be

Much of the district is reclaimed land, built up from the 1970s. The Marina Barrage, completed in 2008, turned the river mouth into a freshwater reservoir, around which the city built its new downtown.
