Between Place des Vosges and the Centre Pompidou, the Marais mixes 17th-century mansions, museums, designer shops and galleries. Come to wander along Rue des Francs-Bourgeois, eat falafel on Rue des Rosiers and visit the Musée Carnavalet, devoted to the history of Paris.
Once a marsh drained in the Middle Ages, the area became the aristocracy’s favourite place to live in the 17th century, with mansions built around the Place Royale, now Place des Vosges. Later neglected, it was saved in the 1960s as one of France’s first protected heritage districts. For centuries it has also been home to a Jewish quarter around Rue des Rosiers.
