South of the centre, Coptic Cairo gathers the Hanging Church, the Church of St Sergius, Ben Ezra Synagogue and the Coptic Museum within a few lanes, around the remains of the Roman fortress of Babylon.
Long before Cairo was founded, the Romans built the fortress of Babylon here on the Nile. A Christian community grew up, and tradition holds that the Holy Family sheltered on the site of the Church of St Sergius. The Hanging Church takes its name from being built over a gatehouse of the fortress.
