Along the Landwehrkanal and around Oranienstraße, Kreuzberg is Berlin’s most colourful district: Turkish and world food, bars, clubs, markets and street art. On Tuesdays and Fridays, the Turkish market on Maybachufer sets up by the canal.
Surrounded on three sides by the Wall, Kreuzberg was a neglected corner of West Berlin, where Turkish guest workers, squatters and artists settled. That history made it the symbol of Berlin counter-culture, and the area keeps its activist spirit despite gentrification.
