Above the Baščaršija, the streets of Kovači climb between traditional houses and cemeteries up to the Yellow Fortress, which overlooks the whole valley at sunset.
Kovači Martyrs’ Cemetery holds fighters who fell during the 1992–1996 siege, including Bosnia and Herzegovina’s first president, Alija Izetbegović. The Yellow Fortress is part of the 18th-century Ottoman fortifications.
