Cobbled lanes, ochre and red façades, the royal palace and cafés: Gamla Stan, the old town, occupies a small island at the heart of Stockholm. Its main square, Stortorget, is lined with colourful houses and the Nobel Prize Museum.
Stockholm was born here in the 13th century. Stortorget was the scene of the “Stockholm Bloodbath” in 1520, before Swedish independence. The royal palace, one of Europe’s largest, replaced a castle that burned down in 1697.
