At the mouth of the Douro, Foz offers beaches, rocks, seaside promenades and grilled-fish restaurants. The Felgueiras lighthouse and its pier stand up to the Atlantic waves.

Tram 1 runs along the Douro to Foz: a lovely ride for a few euros.

Late afternoon, for sunset over the ocean.

The story

How the neighbourhood came to be

A former fishing village, Foz became the seaside resort of Porto’s wealthy families in the 19th century, who built their villas there. The fort of São João Baptista has guarded the river mouth since the 16th century.
