Florence’s heart beats around the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the baptistery and Giotto’s bell tower. A few steps lead to the San Lorenzo central market, the Medici Chapels and the Accademia Gallery, home of the David.
Work on the cathedral began in 1296, but at the time no one knew how to roof its huge crossing. It took Brunelleschi and his ingenious double-shelled dome, completed in 1436, to give Florence the symbol of its Renaissance.
