On the north bank of the creek, Deira is the Dubai of traders: the gold souk, the spice souk, dhows loading at the wharf and cheap food. People haggle, taste, and cross the creek by abra for a dirham.
The city’s oldest commercial centre, Deira thrived on the pearl trade and then as a free port in the 20th century. Wooden dhows still load goods there bound for Iran, India and East Africa.
