Four kilometres of sand, kiosks, football and volleyball courts and the famous black-and-white wave pavement: Copacabana is the world’s most famous beach. The Copacabana Fort, at the tip, has a view over the whole bay.
A simple fishing hamlet, Copacabana was opened up to the city by a tunnel in 1892. The Copacabana Palace hotel, opened in 1923, made it the symbol of carioca glamour. Today the area hosts one of the world’s biggest New Year’s Eve parties every 31 December.
