Inside the bend of the Tiber, Rome’s historic centre strings together wonders: the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain and Campo de’ Fiori. It’s a pleasure to get lost among Baroque churches, palaces, gelato shops and small squares that come alive at night.
The Campus Martius in ancient times, the area became Rome’s inhabited heart in the Middle Ages. In the 16th and 17th centuries, popes and great families commissioned Bernini and Borromini, who shaped its squares and fountains. Piazza Navona still follows the outline of Emperor Domitian’s stadium.
