Lined with plane trees, iron footbridges and locks, the Canal Saint-Martin is where Parisians meet on sunny days. People picnic on the banks, browse independent shops and end the evening in the bistros and wine bars of the nearby streets.
Dug on Napoleon’s orders and opened in 1825, the canal brought drinking water and goods into Paris. Long an area of workshops and warehouses, it was made famous by the film Hôtel du Nord, and since the 2000s has become a favourite spot for cafés and designers.
