Cobbled lanes, coppersmiths’ workshops, Bosnian cafés and ćevapi grills: the Baščaršija has been the beating heart of Sarajevo for more than five centuries. The pigeons of the Sebilj fountain are its mascots.
The bazaar was founded in the 15th century, when the Ottomans made Sarajevo a trading hub of the Balkans. Each street was devoted to a trade; Kazandžiluk, the coppersmiths’ street, still bears witness. Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque was built here in 1531.
