At the heart of the old town, the Barri Gòtic is a maze of narrow lanes around the cathedral, dotted with shady squares, Roman remains and tapas bars. Plaça Reial, with its palm trees and arcades, stays lively until late.
The district stands on the site of the Roman town of Barcino, of which sections of wall and the columns of a temple survive. In the Middle Ages Barcelona built its Gothic cathedral and palaces here. The famous neo-Gothic bridge on Carrer del Bisbe, which looks medieval, actually dates from 1928.
